Agronomic Crops in California

California map showing counties in each agricultural region
Agronomic crops occupy over 5 million of the approximately 8 million irrigated acres in California, having large impacts on water use, nutrient management, farm profitability and human health.

Agronomic commodities produced in California are:

  • Alfalfa
  • Beans
  • Bio-Fuels/Bio-Energy
  • Corn
  • Cotton
  • Oil Seeds
  • Rice
  • Small Grains
  • Sugar Beets

Alfalfa, rice, cotton, wheat and corn are highly represented when separately comparing acres harvested and economic values of agronomic commodities (see graphs below). However, commodities are more evenly represented when economic values are calculated on a per-acre basis.
